Favorite Thing #8: Wine

(From Tomascastelazo)

It’s a legendary class here at Cornell –  HADM 4430: Introduction to Wines. Its fame comes from its popularity (when else do you get credit for tasting wine?) and its failure rate (turns out wine is more complicated than most of us think!). After taking that class I can’t say to have retained much working knowledge of wine – but I did leave with a sense of what I like (Riesling, Semi-dry).

More of Less

I looked at the instructions with dismay. “Pack light! Everything you need should fit easily in ONE carry on bag. The airplane luggage guidelines are not our constraint! We will be traveling in (2) 15 passenger vans.” Great. How am I going to fit everything I need into one little duffel bag?

After coming back from the trip I decided I wanted to stop using facebook and twitter. I realized that for me, they were becoming a substitute for socializing. And I would be much better served by calling someone up instead of just looking at what people had posted on their wall. It was too easy. And I knew real relationships are hard. Current Progress

  • Interview with Tangibl was postponed due to an error with Cornell’s CCNet system.
  • Signed up for All-Ivy Environmental Career Fair on Feb 26
  • Submitted resume for Ecology and Environment, Inc.

Anyone got any leads on Environmental Engineering jobs for me?

Favorite Thing #7: Blondes

I don’t know if I’m a gentleman, but I really like fair hair. Maybe it’s the Solar influence, maybe it’s that whole deal with genetic differences, maybe it’s just growing up in America – but if I had to choose, blonde it is!

What about you? What hair color do you prefer (on yourself or others)?

The End of Charity | The Beginning of Justice

“Look, that bright red one is Mars!”

I was on the roof of a hotel in Marcala, Honduras with several of my team members after a night of food and dancing. The familiar strains of a ukelele filled the air, and I shivered slightly as I looked up at Infortuna Minor. “How appropriate,” I thought.

-

“Service”, “Aid”, “Charity.” Many names for the same thing. It is often a project, trip, or donation of goods borne out of good intentions. But good intentions, as my little brother tells me, are dangerous things. Continue reading ‘The End of Charity | The Beginning of Justice’

Favorite Thing #6: Pickup Podcast

Who says learning how to meet girls has to be a sleazy, underground affair? While Mystery may have coined the technique and Style publicized the Game with his book, my personal preference for learning about attraction is to tune into AJ and Jordan for FREE on iTunes.

If you’re going to start listening to PP, start with the first 10 episodes which contain “The Basic Toolbox.” After that, the guys interview gurus. Lots of them. And the guys they get are good. Check around for the Advanced Toolbox stuff, and especially make sure to listen to the stuff they say about Value and how to be a 10. Totally changed how I live my life.

Of course, not all this stuff is appropriate for a good Christian boy (use some judgment here), but if you do want to improve your social skills these guys will teach you. Did I mention this stuff is FREE?

So fellas, do yourself and women across the world a favor and learn the Art of Charm from these guys. They are some of the best in the business. Their balanced, smart approach to integrating game into your life will keep you from becoming a “game nerd” and get you out there and having the life you always wanted.

-

What do you think about the attraction community? Are there good things to learn from it?

Women, do you feel like you have to “settle” for awkward but “nice” guys? What if you didn’t have to?

Guys, why do you think girls always go for the “jerks”? How can you be a good guy without being a pushover?

Why You Shouldn’t Memorize Bible Verses

Don’t memorize bible verses – it’s a bad idea. What happens is that you get a knowledge of the bible that is fragmented and potentially contradictory. Instead, memorize whole passages or chunks of verses to make sure you get the whole context.

A good example of memorization gone wrong is a popular verse: Ephesians 2:8-9 which says, ” for it is by grace you have been saved through faith and this not from yourselves. It is the gift of God not by works so that no man can boast.” Boom. Did that sucker from memory. But I digress – the passage goes on in verse 10: “for we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

The Job Hunt | 2010.02.05

My name is James Pothen and I need a job.

I feel like there are many stories of people entering and living in college – but how many people write about trying to get out? So every Friday I plan to share with the world my progress on finding gainful employment.

The Rules

  1. No person shall be named. Companies yes, people no.
  2. No revealing specifics about job interviews, etc. That’s just unprofessional.
  3. I owe you a progress report once a week
  4. These entries only stop once I have secured a full-time job

Ready for some fun? Me too. And here’s to becoming a contributing member of society!
